Katherine Monahan LCPC is a therapist at Dirigo Counseling with a passion for being part of the solution for homeless individuals and families. As an undergraduate at UMO and her master’s from University of Southern Maine in counseling she entered the field of mental health over 30 years ago.  During that time, she spent 4 years in corrections and also worked for 15 years at CHCS as an ACT team worker which allowed her to see the particular problems that mental illnesses cause in homeless situations. Part of her job was to help keep them from becoming homeless. As resources dwindle it has become more difficult to keep people housed who have issues and to find suitable housing. Additionally, I  held the position as an Adjunct Professor at Husson University for four years. Over the years, she has worked in several capacities where my clients have had issues with homelessness. She has always been concerned for the homeless and in the last several years it has reached a peak that she has not seen in her time as a social service professional. She grew up walking down Valley Avenue in Bangor as a child with her mother and as a young adult for nature walks. When she drives through there now, there are  tents along the stream and in the wooded areas. She fears that this situation is only going to get worse. Coupled with her passion for being a part of the solution she spends time meditating, gardening, bird watching, whale watching and enjoying time with her family and friends.

My name is Maria Horodeski. I moved to Maine in 1999 from New Jersey. I grew up around substance use disorder and homelessness. I experienced it as a child and in my adult life. In 2003 a became an active addiction. I started my path to recovery in 2009. I am 16 years in recovery. During my recovery I was challenged with significant health issues that really tested me and left so many things up in the air. I continued to strive to make a change. I completed the associate’s program for addiction counseling at Beal college. Shortly after I began working at Bangor area homeless shelter as a shelter aid. In less than a year I received an entry level position as the intake and diversion coordinator. A pilot program that I have kept moving forward for the last three years. I came into this line of work because I wanted to offer what I wish I had during those times. Empathy and understanding. Empathy and kindness are the medicine this world needs. On my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Singing, dancing and outings. I’m a free spirit and enjoy this beautiful life that I was gifted. It didn’t have to be this way.  I also volunteer my time to community activities and events that help our community.
